15 Shots: 8 Ounces: Tragedy

Good Housekeeping doesn't usually make it to my Must Read list.  However, I recently read a tragic story about Shelby Allen, a 17-year-old girl who died after drinking 15 shots of vodka.

There is so much tragedy involved in this story.  Parents and students need to read Shelby Allen's story so they understand what happened and understand how to avoid this from ever happening again.  Unfortunately, too many students and parents choose not to listen and think a tragedy like this will never touch them.  That is, until it does.

Read the article and let me know what you think.  I promise you it's worth your time.

Here are a few quotes from the article:

"We second-guessed everything we did that day. If only we had said she couldn't spend the night at Alyssa's house... If only Debbie had taken her shopping in Sacramento that day, as originally planned. ...if only we had known more about alcohol poisoning and binge drinking so we could have educated her...all these things go through our minds, to this day."

"I almost wish this had happened out on the street, because at least there, I think Shelby would have gotten help. A stranger would have at least called 911 for Shelby. A stranger would have tried to contact her parents. My daughter made poor choices that night, but teenagers make poor choices. It's our responsibility as adults to help them survive those poor choices

"The kids at our high school, right after Shelby died, were all shocked and kind of scared straight. But that didn't even last very long. Now most of them are drinking just like they did before. One of our friends was talking to me the other day about how wasted she got, how she was throwing up, and I just looked at her like, Didn't you learn anything from Shelby's death? Kids just don't get it. They need more information, and they need to hear it more often."
