Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day

Shakespeare may have written some great sonnets but I doubt he was ever able to experience the relaxation of summer life in The Clem. It's been a calm couple of weeks: ride in the morning, vacuum the pool, nap, read and repeat the process the next day. I recommend Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. It’s a fascinating look at the true cost of fast food. I’ve added it to my AP Language syllabus. I hope my juniors enjoy it as much as I have. As a result of Schlosser’s thesis, the golden arches have lost a bit of their luster. The book reminds me of Steinbeck’s account of the Oakies in The Grapes of Wrath. Humans could choose to work the California orchards and become victims of the system or nobly choose to battle the system…and still become victims. Ahhh, it’s summer…not the time to wax philosophic. I don’t need moral enigmas distracting me while I’m vacuuming the pool.

I also had the chance to see the live broadcast of the Dennis Miller show from the Wintergarden at the GM RenCen. It was classic Miller. He traded quips with the audience revealing the sharp wit that made him an SNL star. I like his stance on the amnesty bill and the fairness doctrine but I part way with his libertarian views on abortion and gay rights. Still, however, it was an amusing three hours.

With too much time on my hands, I attempted to fix my frozen seat post. After two frustrating hours, I loaded the bike on the roof rack and journeyed to the LBS for some much needed help and experience. I’m rolling again. I’ve learned my lesson and will let the guys that know do what I think I know. It’s easier and less expensive.

Have you seen Supersize Me? Its pretty good. I read FFN a few years ago. Since then I have limited my patronage to the Golden Arches to emergency pre-race BMs in their facilities. I figure that is a great way to stick it to Ronald. They also recently made a FFN movie. In addition, in the DVD extras of Supersize Me, he interviews Eric S.

I sadly have begun little dirt dawg down the path of fast food. With a sharpshooter precision he can pick out a golden arch from a mile away.

Your Dennis Miller experience sounds quite entertaining. He certainly has a way with words. It is also nice to see a Bush-backer that opposes the Shamnesty Bill.
